Into the Blue art has made a name for itself in the coastal art community and continues to grow in popularity among art collectors. The talented artist has developed her skill in such as way that each painting has more than just her signature to identify it as a ‘Shanthi.’ Her entire body of work shares a common theme, style and feel that helps the full collection stand out on its own. Shanthi’s acrylic based paintings are mainly ocean themed landscapes or sea life. She favors choosing subjects that are full of life.
“I always lean towards painting subjects that emit some sort of energy. I don’t prefer painting still subjects. If not living creatures, then the temperamental sea will do. Even a crashing wave is full of life and that is something I desire to capture in my own style.”
Her color palette is full of vibrant colors that further emphasizes her colorful character. Her art is undoubtedly the focal point of the room and can bring every piece of the decor full circle. The photo above, is of her whimsical turtle painting called ‘Diving Sea Diamonds‘ displayed for sale in Mango Furniture. This large format print is actually a giclee reproduction of her original, which is quite small in size.
Shanthi can print her art in virtually any size from mini prints to large format prints. She also embellishes the print reproductions to make them look more like her originals. Embellishing is painting over the print in areas that would enhance the image.
“Believe it or not, sometimes my embellished giclee prints look better than my original. This is because there is more of a contrast in the surface texture. A print is smooth but when certain areas of the print are touched over with thick acrylic paints, you get more of a contrast which makes the print look almost three dimensional.”
The image to the left is her famous piece, the ‘Salty Curl‘ hanging at Port City Java coffee shop. One of her best sellers, this lively crashing wave looks like its literally coming out of the canvas! This piece also has the honor of hanging in the office of Campbell Orthodontics in Wilmington, NC.
Sea turtles are a popular subject among the beach locals. Shanthi’s painting ‘Sea Turtle’s Beginning’ is one of the most popular turtle pieces. A very large format print hangs in Dr. Bozart Dentistry and Alderman Hall at University of North Carolina Wilmington. The college also has her award winning piece, ‘Mind Takes Flight‘ at the main office in the psychology building.
The painting below, called Jellyfish Tango, is a piece that gets much attention. This collage is made of several mini canvases, 6 inches by 6 inches in size. It can be hung on one wall (as in the photo below), or hung where two walls meet so that it looks as if the jelly fish are swimming around the corner wall !
Not only does Shanthi paint gallery-wrapped canvas prints, but she is author and illustrator of her children’s book series called ‘ The Tales of Tiggy & Tobias.’ Shanthi’s inspiration for the books come from her two cats. Tiggy and Tobias are brother cats who have completely opposite personalities. They live with Shanthi at her beach front home, although in the stories they live in a lighthouse. With a total of nine books in the series, each book presents one moral value from the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit. Her intent was to create fun stories that teach important values to children. Currently three of the nine books have been released and Shanthi is working on completing the collection.
